Rules of the Competition 2017

Competition to Design a Ladies Hat

Winning Design 2016

Summary of the rules for 2017

Applications are invited from fashion students from an approved college; applications may also be made by employees working in the headwear industry of a trainee or apprentice status.

This year applicants are also welcome to enter the competition within 2 years of completing their millinery studies or starting their own millinery business.

Judging the 2017 Competition

  • Entries may be submitted from any country within the European Community.
  • There is no age restriction.
  • Whilst the award will be for design, that design should be capable of being manufactured in a factory or workroom for commercial sale. A sample must be submitted.
  • There should be only one entry per student and a maximum of five entries per college unless prior permission has been granted.
  • There should be a written backing paper outlining the thought and inspiration behind the design, and guidelines for production of the hat. Entries may not be judged if this paper is not submitted.
  • Fur felt or wool felt has to be used, although it need not be the major content of the hat.
  • The hat must be made to fit an average head size of 57cm.

Please note – Art work should not exceed A3 (42cm x 30cm)

Award prizes:

The First Prize winner will receive £1200 plus a total of two weeks work experience (one in Rachel Trevor-Morgan’s London workroom and one at Walter Wrights’s Factory in Luton)

The Second Prize winner will receive £600.

The Third Prize winner will receive £450.

Minor Prizes of £200 will be awarded for: Artwork and Presentation, Commerciality, Craftsmanship and Innovative Use of Felt.

 

Entries should not be sent before February 1st. 2017 and the closing date will be March 1st. 2017.

All non award winning entries will be returned in April 2017. Award winning entries will not be returned until after June 2017.

Judging will take place during April 2017 and the Judges decision will be final

All entries should be clearly marked Feltmakers Design Award and please use the application form which you can download from the link below. Entries must be sent to:

c/o Walter Wright, Albion Works, 29 Albion Road, Luton, Beds, LU2 ODS.

A return address label must be included and if from a college, where applicable, a list of students’ names and contents.

All submissions must be sent in a strong carton suitable for returning the entry.
