Reg Cracknell 1932 - 2008

Reg was born on the 11th June 1932. He sadly passed away on the 7th August 2008 following a short illness and heart attack.

To those that knew Reg well, he will be remembered as a thoughtful man, a bit of a thinker, who chose his words and actions carefully. He was decisive and to the point in all areas of his life. He was also an extremely proud man, who lived his life by core values; honesty, integrity, commitment and opportunity, which he mutually shared with his family and many friends and work colleagues over the years.

Above all Reg was a dedicated and devoted family man. He was married to Margaret for over 51 years and had two children, Susan and Andrew. Reg took much pleasure following the development of his children’s lives and with their subsequent marriages to David and Lucinda. He was also a very active grandfather and took particular pleasure in the development and interests of his five grand children, with whom he shared many memorable experiences.

Reg had a varied and challenging career. A professional mechanical engineer by trade he spent his formative years working as a production engineer for Reckitt and Coleman in his home city of Norwich. He subsequently moved to English Electric in Leicestershire in the 1950’s where he faced the challenge of developing and implementing operational and controls systems for new generation nuclear power stations. Reg spent the majority of his career working as s Senior Civil Servant with the Property Services Agency rising to become the Head of Profession. He was particularly proud of the achievements of his work colleagues in this organisation putting in place engineering standards for the UK industry, many of which are still in use today in variant forms.

Reg was enthusiastic and committed in his long association with the Feltmakers Livery to which he was elected in 1977. He took much pleasure from the long lasting friendships he made there and also at the Feltmakers Lodge of which he was a Past Master. Reg was very pleased when his son in law David Clowes was elected to the livery in 1992 and was very proud to appoint his eldest grandson Michael as his apprentice in 2005. It was evident at the Spring 2008 Livery Dinner, where Michael was Reg’s guest, that he obviously enjoyed good-natured generational discussions.

Reg will be greatly missed, but will be remembered by the many warm memories and shared experiences we encountered with him.
